Horse Racing for Beginners

We will try and provide information and strategies to help you better understand Handicapping and the different types of wagers.

We decided to create this section to increase public knowledge on the sport we love. This will be especially helpful for any new handicappers that are looking to do some Kentucky derby betting or wager on any other horse racing in the upcoming months.

Different Types of Wagers

Win, Place, Show

Win – The meaning of the bet Win is the horse that is wagered upon must cross the finish line 1st. Here is an example of how to bet this wager ($ 2.00 to Win on # 1.)

Place – The meaning of the bet Place is the horse that is wagered upon must finish 1st or 2nd. Here is an example of this wager ($2.00 to Place on # 1.)

Show – the meaning of the bet Show is the horse wagered upon must finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Here is an example of how to bet this wager ($ 2.00 to Show on # 1.)

Other combinations of these 3 types of wagers. (win,place,show ) You may combine these wagers. Here is an example ($ 2.00 Win, Place, Show on # 1) The horse must finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd to receive a payoff. If the horse that is wagered upon wins, you receive the mutual payoff for all 3 of the wagers. If the horse finishes 2nd, you receive only Place and Show Payoffs. If the horse finishes 3rd, you only receive the show payoff. If the horse finishes 4th, congratulations you have just lost your first race.

Exotic Bets

Well the easy part is over this will be a little more complicated. We will try and explain the different types of Exotic Bets so you have a better understanding of the meaning of each one.

Exacta – The meaning of the wager exacta is you must select the 1st and 2nd place horse in the exact order. Here is an example of this wager ($2.00 straight exacta #1, #2 ) this means the #1 horse must win the race and the # 2 horse must finish 2nd. If you have selected this correctly you win. You will receive the mutual payoff for the exacta. If the # 2 horse wins the race you lose.

Quinella – The meaning of the word quinella is you must select the horses that finish 1st and 2nd. Here is an example of this wager ($2.00 quinella #1, #2) this means the # 1 horse must finish 1st or 2nd and the # 2 horse must finish 1st or 2nd. If you have selected this correctly you win. If the # 1 horse wins and the # 2 horse finishes 3rd you lose. Notice, this wager compared to the exacta lets you have the reverse order of finish also.

Trifecta – The meaning of the word trifecta is you must select the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place horses in the exact order. Here is an example of this wager ($2.00 straight trifecta #1, #2 ,#3 ) this means the # 1 horse must win, #2 horse must finish 2nd, and the # 3 horse must finish 3rd in the exact order. If you have selected this correctly you win. If you have one of the horses not in the correct order you lose. Are you starting think this is tough, wait till you read the next one.

Superfecta – The meaning of the word superfecta is you must select the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place horse in the exact order. Here is an example of this wager ($2.00 straight superfecta #1, #2, #3, #4) this means the #1 horse must win, the #2 horse must finish 2nd, the #3 horse must finish 3rd and the #4 horse must finish 4th. If you have selected this correctly you win. If one or more of your horses are not in the order that you have placed your bet, you lose. Some times wagering Trifecta’s’ or Superfecta’s is like playing the lottery you will receive a substantial amount of money if you win. You can, also, lose a lot of money playing many different combinations.
